The subsoil of Naples is crossed by a large network of tunnels, galleries, aqueducts and spaces dug and used by man during the history of the city from several centuries BC until a few years after the end of the Second World War, and still today, at least in part, can be visited. The underground sites are distinguished from the underground archaeological finds by their underground origin since their construction. The building that currently houses the museum is the Palazzo degli Studi, built in 1585 as a “cavalry barracks”. The palace represents a certain architectural importance being in fact one of the most imposing monumental palaces in Naples. It stands on the area of an ancient necropolis of the Greek Neapolis: the necropolis of Santa Teresa.
